Country Profile: The Cotswolds

The Cotswolds are an area of exquisite scenic countryside in rural south-central England covering parts of 6 counties, notably Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire. It is made up of quintessentially English villages of honey-coloured stone and lively market towns.  Traditional thatched cottages and stone roofed houses and the famous dry stone walls abound. In these beautiful hills and valleys, medieval wool-trading merchants amassed enormous wealth and sponsored its many perpendicular wool churches with grand spires which can be spotted on the skyline for many a mile.

This is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and its rolling hills and valleys are home to the famous Cotswolds breed of sheep. The word also derives from Anglo Saxon “Wold” meaning hillside and “Cote”  meaning sheep enclosure.

Explore some of the country's greatest palaces, castles and cathedrals and walk through breath-taking landscapes along historic trails. As well as the popular Cotswold Way 102 mile long walking trail, this area has long been popular as a location for filming scenes for movies and television programmes including Agatha Christie, Price and Prejudice, Bridget Jones's diary, Harry Potter and Downton Abbey !
