On our small group walking tour of the Dolomites we walk among the most spectacular scenery in northern Italy. Enjoy mountain landscapes of alpine lakes and meadows dwarfed by soaring peaks and glaciers.
Country Profile: The Dolomites
The spectacular Dolomites Mountain Range is a unique natural paradise in northeastern Italy. Dolomite rock is a white or coloured limestone formed by marine deposits and coral 230 million years ago. Forced up by tectonic events they were then sculpted into snow-clad peaks, deep valleys and lakes by retreating ice ages.
The Dolomites are breathtaking and deservedly UNESCO world heritage, a mountain range in the northern Italian Alps bordering Austria where peaks rise to above 3,000 metres. It features some of the most beautiful mountain landscapes anywhere, with vertical walls, sheer cliffs and a high density of narrow, deep and long valleys.
The Dolomite mountains have spectacular steep pinnacles and rock walls which rise vertically towards the sky. In its pretty verdant valleys you find the Tyrolean flavour of the Val Gardena which is German speaking, the Val Badia where people speak Ladin as their first language and the Ampezzo region which is very Italian. As a result many street signs are written in three languages!
In the winter this is a popular area for recreational skiing - they hosted the 1956 Winter Olympics - and in the summer the Dolomites come alive for walkers with beautiful trails to discover by day and enormous starry skies to gaze at by night. A paradise for lovers of the great outdoors!
