Country Profile: Umbria
Umbria is the green heart of Italy, a landlocked region which borders Tuscany to the north and west, the Marche to the east and Lazio to the south. It is characterized by the natural beauty of hills, mountains and valleys. Umbria is the place where you can loose yourself in sleepy and charming medieval hill towns and eat unexpectedly delicious food in unpretentious family-run restaurants.
If you have heard of Umbria before you will have heard that this is the birthplace of many saints. St. Francis, St Benedict, St Rita and St Claire all radically impacted catholicism and all were Umbrian. Some of the most important frescos in Italy are to be found in churches dotted around the region. Nestled on the side of Mt. Subasio Assisi is the perfect example: stone houses, cobbled streets, and imposing medieval architecture, 3 major churches and an enormous Basilica - all with frescoes.
Other cities like Perugia, Spoleto, Gubbio and Orvieto are equally as charming and nestle beautifully in the surrounding mountains and forests making it perfect for outdoor activities, walking and cycling.
Lake Trasimeno is another gem of this region. It is the 4th largest lake in Italy and from its shores one can take a ferry or paddleboat out to one of its three islands. The small towns overlooking the lake are as charming as any, perfect for a nice stroll and a gelato.
