Country Profile: Camino de Santiago
The Camino de Santiago is an ancient pilgrimage route through northern Spain. It starts in St Jean Pied de Port on the French Pyrenean border and finishes almost 900km later in Santiago de Compostela or Finisterre on the northwest Atlantic coast of Spain.
On the way to Santiago it passes through the ancient Roman city of Pamplona, the wine region of Rioja and the incredible cities of Burgos and Leon with their imposing Gothic Cathedrals. From Leon to Astorga lie more ancient Roman ruins, the spectacular Gaudi Palace and the Knights Templar Castle of Ponferrada. In the rural region of Galicia traditional farming villages, hilly pastures and many river crossings create a feeling of timeless motion.
Arriving in Santiago de Compostela and gazing at the ancient Cathedral is like a dream come true, an unforgettable and rewarding experience. If you continue to the coast of Finisterre, known in ancient times as the end of the world and stroll bare foot on the beach you will find scallop shells - the age old symbol of 'El Camino'. Take one home as a keepsake.
Millions of people have travelled on foot to the sacred shrine of St James the Apostle, mostly for religious purposes. The story of this pilgrimage is so ancient that it is a fine line between history and legend, reality and spirituality. The pilgrimage began as a Christian movement. Today’s motives for embarking on the journey have shifted from religion to spirituality. Many modern pilgrims travel 'The Pilgrim's Way' to break free from the ties of the modern world, live an authentic moment in life, allowing time for mindful reflection.
All this is what you will life on a Caspin Journeys tour on the Camino de Santiago.
