PICK UP: 10.30 in Ajaccio, by the Hotel San Carlu

DROP OFF: 9.00 independent departure from Ajaccio

We highly recommend arriving in Ajaccio a day or two before the tour begins to settle in and shake off any jet lag. As the birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte, this elegant city offers a perfect introduction to the island’s unique culture.

We meet at 10.30 in Ajaccio and head north along the coast, soaking up spectacular sea views as we go.

Our destination is the village of Piana perched dramatically on the cliffs of the Golfe de Porto, gazing out over the fiery red rock formations of the Calanches de Piana, a World Heritage Site. After lunch with a view, we go for an afternoon hike to a Genovese watchtower on the Capo Rosso peninsula for 360° views over the whole nature reserve.

Meals: Lunch, Dinner
Hike: 8km, Elev. +500m
Overnight: Piana

Our day starts in the seaside village of Porto, where we get on a boat and cruise along the volcanic cliffs of the Scandola Nature Reserve. This is one of the most carefully protected areas in Corsica due to its rich flora and fauna home to a broad range of birds, fish and algae. We disembark in the charming fishing village of Girolata, accessible only by sea, to enjoy a delicious fresh fish lunch.

After lunch we hike back along the rugged coastline and return to scenic Piana for the night.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Hike: 12km, Elev.+350m
Overnight: Piana

We leave Piana and the rugged coastline behind and head inland towards Corte.

Starting at the heights of a mountain pass we hike out to through a forest of laricio pines to Radule waterfall which plunges into two swimmable pools .

In the afternoon we drive through spectacular mountain scenery to Corte, in the heart of Corsica. Our hotel is situated in the Restonica Valley, perched on the edge of a river.

In the afternoon we take some time to explore Corte, to uncover the resilient spirit of Pasquale Paoli and the golden era when this alpine town was the capital of a fledgling Corsican republic.

Following our coastal stroll, we head to the nearby port of Saint-Florent. You will have free time here to find a local bistro for lunch and wander through the town’s chic streets and marina.

In the afternoon, our journey takes us through the heart of the celebrated Patrimonio wine valley to a local estate, where we’ll learn about the island’s unique viticulture. Our day begins with a walk out along the famous white cliffs of Bonifacio, to a hidden beach and a chance for a swim! After lunch, the afternoon is yours to wander the modern and luxurious marina district, lose yourselves in its labyrinth of narrow alleyways, dip into boutiques or relax at an outdoor café.

The natural magic permeating this forest is palpable, it is something which you can’t quite describe in words. After lunch we head to Sartène, a town which proudly boasts the title of “the most Corsican of Corsican towns”. It is a charming place to visit and gives us a glimpse into daily Corsican life.

FAQs

Our most popular Questions and Answers about Corsica and our Small Group Tours

We believe no other tour covers the breadth and variety of the whole island the way we do. While many itineraries focus on a single region or just the high-altitude trails, we offer a complete experience. We take you from the fiery red rocks of the Calanche de Piana and the granite peaks of the Restonica Valley (the island’s historic heart), to the unique Desert des Agriates, the wild peninsula of Cap Corse and all the way south to the limestone cliffs of Bonifacio.

You get the full “Mountain in the Sea” experience—coast, alpine peaks, and desert—all in one trip.

We meet at 12:00 PM on Day 1 in Ajaccio at the Hotel San Carlu. From there, we will head north along the coast to our first destination on the Golfe de Porto.

You have two main options: a flight or a ferry from the south of France.

By Air (Fastest Option) Fly into Ajaccio  Airport (AJA).

  • From Paris: Frequent daily direct flights depart from Paris Orly (ORY) via Air Corsica and Air France (approx. 1h 35m).
  • From Other Hubs: Direct flights are available from major French cities like Nice and Marseille (approx. 50 mins).

International Travellers: If arriving at Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG), you must transfer to Paris Orly to connect. Allow approx. 1h 30m for the transfer between airports.

By Ferry (Scenic Option) Ferries run regularly from the south of France to the Port of Ajaccio. These are typically overnight services with cabins and restaurants onboard; we recommend booking a cabin in advance.

  • From Toulon: The most frequent route. usually overnight, arriving early morning.
  • From Nice: A good option if you are already on the Riviera. Duration: 7–9 hours.

From Marseille: Typically overnight services. Duration: 11–13 hours.

*taking a ferry is a valid option, especially if you plan on spending a few days in the south of France before our journey.

The airport is only 5km (3 miles) from the center.

  • Taxi: Approximately €20–€30 (15–20 minutes).
  • Shuttle Bus: The “Navette” bus runs frequently to the bus station (Gare Routière) and takes about 20 minutes.

If you have extra time before or after the tour, we recommend staying at Hotel San Carlu (where we stay on the final night) for its excellent location and quality. Ajaccio is vibrant and historic; while there, we recommend you: • Visit Maison Bonaparte: Napoleon’s birthplace in the old town. • Explore Musée Fesch: Home to one of France’s finest collections of Italian art. • Wander the Market: Head to Place Foch in the mornings for local cheeses and charcuterie.

This tour is rated Challenging according to the Caspin difficulty scale. (See our full guide here: Caspin Difficulty Level Guide)

This tour offers a mix of coastal and mountain walking, including a section of the famous GR20 trail. You should be comfortable walking between 5km and 13km per day.

  • Elevation: Expect elevation gains generally between 300m and 600m, with some hikes reaching high plateaus at 1700m.

  • Terrain: The terrain can often be quite challenging, with uneven ground and hikes which go from rugged coastlines and white cliffs to forest paths and mountain trails.

Corsican cuisine is a unique blend of French and Italian influences, often described as “rustic and hearty.” • Specialties: Expect excellent charcuterie (coppa, lonzu), wild boar stews, brocciu cheese, and chestnut flour desserts. • Seafood: On the coast, fresh local fish and shellfish are staples. • Wines: The island produces distinct and high-quality wines (Vermentino, Nielluccio) which we will enjoy throughout the tour.

We have curated a collection of locally-owned 4 and 5-star hotels that perfectly balance authentic Corsican culture with high-end comfort.

Rather than staying in impersonal chains, you can expect unique properties in stunning locations—from peaceful mountain villages to vibrant coastal harbours. Each hotel is chosen for its warm hospitality, superior service, and distinct sense of place, ensuring you relax in style after a day of walking.

We schedule our tours during the two prime windows for hiking on the island to avoid the intense summer heat.

  • Late April / Early May (Spring): This is when Corsica is incredibly lush. The famous scented maquis shrubland is in full bloom, wildflowers carpet the hills, and temperatures are fresh and perfect for hiking.
  • October (Autumn): The air is crisp and clear, and the chestnut forests turn golden with beautiful autumn foliage. The weather remains stable and mild, and the sea is often still warm enough for swimming after a day’s walk.

Because Corsica is mountainous and our hotels are high-quality, we recommend packing for both rugged trails and comfortable evenings. A detailed packing list will be sent prior to departure, but the essentials are:

  • Footwear: Sturdy, well-broken-in walking boots with ankle support are mandatory for the rocky trails. Trainers are not suitable.

  • Walking Poles: We provide one walking pole per person. If you prefer hiking with two, please bring a second one with you.

  • Day Pack: A comfortable 20–30 litre backpack to carry your water, picnic, and extra layers during the day.

  • Evening Wear: “Smart casual” is ideal for our 4 and 5-star hotels—you do not need formal wear.

  • The Basics: Waterproof jacket, sun hat, swimwear, and a refillable water bottle.
