La Dolce Vita & Sensational Coastal Scenery

On our exciting walking tour of the Amalfi Coast you will explore an area of sensational coastal scenery: limestone cliffs, serpentine roads, terraced lemon groves and famous towns like Amalfi, Positano and Ravello.

Villages and remote monasteries here have long been connected by a series of ancient footpaths, which provide a perfect opportunity for walking and hiking. As you go take a trip back in time on visits to Greek Paestum, Roman Pompeii and Capri where Emperors held court during the Roman Imperial era more than two thousand years ago!

PICK UP & DROP OFF INFO

PICK UP:  13.00 NAPLES INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

DROP OFF: 10.00 NAPLES INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

Before the trip starts, spend a few nights in Naples.

Pick up at 13.00 at the Naples airport.

Please make sure you have had lunch before we meet you as we will be going straight to Pompeii!

Guided walk in the Ruins (3 hrs) of this fascinating and unique archaeological site. Life came to an abrupt halt with the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD and the entire roman city was completely buried for 1700 years.

A scenic drive south follows along the bay of Salerno to Paestum where we stay overnight.

Meals: Dinner
Walk: 3 hrs in the archaeological Park ruins. Feels like 5km
Overnight: Paestum

Paestum is an ancient Greco-Roman city and an excellent complement to Pompeii. Settled by Greek colonists in the 6th century BC, Paestum was by Greek-Lucanians, Romans and Christians. Malarial swamps led to the abandonment of the city in the 9th century AD, but also helped preserve its finest artefacts. Today, Paestum boasts three well-preserved Doric Greek temples, ruins of an ancient city and an excellent museum.

Lunch is at a Buffalo Mozzarella farm.

In the afternoon we take the famous Amalfi Drive to Ravello plus an optional 1hr uphill optional walk from Minori to Ravello – 1500 steps/stairs!!

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Walk: 5 km; 2hrs archaeological park + 1 hr. uphill steps, 3 hrs
Overnight: Ravello

Walk through lemon groves down to the tiny village of Atrani. Tour of Amalfi and the cathedral. Free time to explore and have lunch.

Ride or walk back up to Ravello for a free afternoon to visit the Duomo and gardens of Villa Rufolo and Cimbrone whose magnificent location offers the best views of this beautiful coastline.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Hike: 10 km, +/- 350m Elev, 3 hrs
Overnight: Ravello

We take our first boat trip on the Amalfi coast to look out and admire the colorful houses and villages nestled in the coves and built high up on the hillsides.

Visit the sophisticated resort town of Positano, with its steep slopes and sweet-scented wisteria, smart boutiques selling lemon-themed ceramics, summer clothing and artisan leather sandals. There is plenty of time for Gelato ice-cream too, maybe even more than one!

We return to base to relax and enjoy a free evening.

Meals: Breakfast & Lunch
Walk: Town strolling
Overnight: Ravello

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast, departing mid-morning in the minibus to reach the start of the Sentiero degli Dei or ‘Path of the Gods’, a majestic, rugged hiking trail overlooking spectacular coastal scenery which leads to the elegant resort of Positano.

We put on our hiking boots to walk on a narrow, rocky path for about 5 hours including a break for a picnic lunch.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Hike: 12 km (feels more like 15km), total elev. gain/drop +/- 500 m, 5 hrs
Altitude: between 420-650 m
Overnight: Ravello

We take a ferry to the Island of Capri, favoured in ancient times by Roman emperors Augustus and Tiberius. Today the island is very popular with a labyrinth of charming alleys and gardens of aromatic flowers and shrubs if you take the time to go off the main drag!

Enjoy lunch in the Piccola Marina and then walk up to Capri. Weather permitting sail around the island in the emerald blue waters and through the faraglioni rocks.

The best way to enjoy Capri is to stroll and take in the atmosphere of the elegant boutiques and outdoor cafes in Capri’s main square and explore its alleys. We will not be the only tourists doing this but with a little care everyone can be a happy tourist!

We return by ferry and you can now relax and dine at your leisure.

Meals: Breakfast & Lunch
Hike: 3km; 2hrs strolling
Overnight: Ravello

From the hamlet of Scala above Ravello we walk into the ‘Valle delle Ferriere’ Natural Park through cleverly cultivated vineyards and lemon groves on steep, terraced hillsides.

After lunch, we enter the gorge and make our way past waterfalls, abandoned iron-works and paper mills as we descend into the bustling town of Amalfi for a well earned and thirst-quenching ‘sorbetto al limone’ in the heart of Amalfi.

We get together to celebrate our achievements and have dinner in the heart of Ravello.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Hike: Feels like 16 km 7 hrs.
Altitude: 400 m down to the sea; elev. +50 m / – 400 m

FAQs

Our most popular Questions and Answers about the Amalfi Coast and our Small Group Tours.

We allow you to experience the Amalfi Coast in full, blending iconic towns with peaceful, off-the-beaten-path hiking to avoid the crowds. You will discover the ancient wonders of Pompeii and Paestum before we explore the authentic side of the coast in smaller, lesser-known villages like Atrani and Scala. Enjoy exclusive experiences, including a private boat trip to Capri, and live in style by staying in pristine Ravello, high above the bustle. From the majestic Path of the Gods to hidden valleys, this is the authentic side of the coast.

  • Meeting Point: We meet at 13:00 on Day 1 at Naples International Airport. From there, we will drive directly to Pompeii, so please ensure you have had lunch before meeting us.
  • Drop Off: The tour concludes with a scheduled drop-off at Naples International Airport at 10:00 am on Day 8.
    • Flights: Please schedule your departure flight for after 13.00 PM to allow sufficient time for check-in and security.

Naples is the gateway to the south and is easily accessible for international travellers.

  • By Air: The most convenient option is to fly directly into Naples International Airport (NAP) (also known as Capodichino). Many European hubs connect here.
  • From Rome: If you are flying into Rome Fiumicino (FCO), you can take the Leonardo Express train to Roma Termini station, and then a high-speed Frecciarossa train to Napoli Centrale (approx. 1 hour 10 mins).

We highly recommend arriving a few days early. Naples is a vibrant, high-energy city packed with culture.

  • Where to Stay: We recommend the Hotel Costantinopoli 104. It is a refined oasis in the heart of the historic centre.
  • What to See: Visit the National Archaeological Museum to see the treasures of Pompeii, the stunning San Severo Chapel, or the Royal Palace. Even a trip up to the Certosa di San Martino is worth it for the incredible views of the Bay of Naples.
  • Islands: If you have extra time, you can also take a ferry to the islands of Procida or Ischia.

We consider this tour Challenging due to the nature of the steep and rugged coastal terrain.

  • The Steps: The Amalfi Coast is famous for its vertical landscape. You must be comfortable walking up and down many steps—sometimes up to 1,500 stairs in a single stretch.
  • Daily Activity: Walks generally range from 5km to 12km (3 to 7.5 miles), but the rugged terrain often makes distances feel longer.
  • Terrain: You will encounter everything from paved alleyways and cobblestones to narrow, rocky hiking trails on the Path of the Gods and loose ground in the gorges.

Read more on our Difficulty Level Guide.

You are in the culinary heart of Italy! The food here is fresh, flavourful, and world-famous.

  • Local Specialties: We will visit a farm to taste fresh Buffalo Mozzarella in Paestum. You can also expect incredible seafood, sun-ripened tomatoes, fresh vegetables and authentic Neapolitan pizza.
  • Lemons: The region is famous for its lemons. We walk through the lemon groves and, of course, enjoy a thirst-quenching sorbetto al limone (lemon sorbet) or a glass of Limoncello.

We have selected a mix of locations that allow you to experience the different “moods” of the coast.

  • Paestum: We start near the ancient temples for a touch of history.
  • Ravello: We spend time in this elegant, hilltop town, famous for its gardens and music, offering some of the best views of the coastline far above the crowds.
  • Positano: You will have time to enjoy the “picture-perfect” resort atmosphere with its smart boutiques and wisteria-covered streets

We strictly schedule our tours in April and October.

  • Weather: These months offer the perfect hiking climate—pleasant and mild without the sweltering heat of mid-summer.
  • Crowds: The Amalfi Coast can be incredibly busy in summer. By travelling in spring and autumn, we avoid the peak tourist crush, allowing for a more relaxed and authentic experience on the trails and in the villages.

Amalfi’s terrain is diverse, so we recommend a versatile layering system.

  • Footwear: Sturdy, well-broken-in walking boots with ankle support are mandatory for rocky trails and volcanic paths.
  • Clothing: Pack a waterproof jacket, sun hat, and a warm layer for mountain altitudes.
  • Evening Wear: “Smart casual” is perfect for our hotels and dinners.
  • Gear: A 20–30 litre day pack to carry water and extra layers is essential.
