A Journey on foot through mountain peaks & Alpine meadows

Join us on this Italian Dolomites Hiking Tour and explore a spectacular mountain range and natural paradise in Northern Italy. Dolomite rock is a white or coloured limestone formed by marine deposits and coral 230 million years ago. Forced up by tectonic events they were then sculpted into snow-clad peaks, deep valleys and lakes by retreating ice ages.

Enjoy landscapes of alpine meadows and evergreen & deciduous larch and spruce woods, dwarfed by soaring peaks and glaciers. In late spring and early summer anemone, pasque flower, gentian and the beautiful globe flower abound. This is habitat for ibex, roe deer, chamois, marmots, eagles, and huge anthills.

Sleep restfully in quiet rooms in delightfully luxurious alpine hotels with SPA, sauna, and swimming pool facilities. Savour the wonderful variety of Tyrolian cuisine, the atmosphere of mountain refuges and charming villages. Our Dolomites hikes are an invigorating dive into incredible scenery.

FAQs

Our most popular Questions and Answers about the Dolomites and our Small Group Tours.

We offer a perfect balance of invigorating activity and pure relaxation. Unlike rugged trekking expeditions, our tour combines the spectacular scenery of the UNESCO World Heritage Dolomites with the comfort of delightfully luxurious alpine hotels. You will dive into incredible landscapes—from the iconic Tre Cime di Lavaredo to the Alpe di Siusi meadows—while enjoying spa facilities, swimming pools, and the unique blend of Austrian and Italian culture that defines the South Tyrol.

This tour is designed for fit, active walkers. While not a technical climbing expedition, it is an invigorating experience with full days on the trail. You should be comfortable walking between 10 km and 14 km per day , with hiking times ranging from 4 to 7 hours. We tackle significant elevation gains (up to 600m in a day ) and navigate varied terrain, including loose rubble and high-altitude trails up to 2450m. It is a rewarding physical challenge that requires good stamina.

Read more on our Difficulty Level Guide.

We meet at 14:00 on Day 1 at Bolzano Train Station. From there, we will drive approximately one hour into the Dolomite Alps to our first destination in Compatsch.

We start our tour with a leisurely walk to the Hotel, so have comfortable walking shoes handy on arrival.

Bolzano is easily accessible by train from several major international gateways. Here are the best options:

  • From Milan (Malpensa – MXP): A common entry point for international flights. Take the express train to Milan Central Station, then connect to a train to Bolzano.
  • From Venice (Marco Polo – VCE): A scenic option. Take a shuttle to Venice Mestre station, then a train to Bolzano.
  • From Munich (MUC): A great option from the north. Trains run directly from Munich to Bolzano through the stunning Brenner Pass.

Yes, we highly recommend arriving in Bolzano 1–2 days before the tour starts. This gives you time to explore this beautiful town, withc charming streets and shops and famous for its Archaeological Museum, where Ötzi the “Iceman” rests. Where to stay: We recommend the Parkhotel Mondschein or the Hotel Greif for a comfortable and central stay in Bolzano.

We select high-end alpine hotels that balance authentic charm with modern luxury. We know how important rest is after an active day, so we ensure every hotel features excellent amenities, including spas, saunas, and swimming pools. It is the ideal environment to relax, recover, and enjoy the hospitality of the Dolomites.

You are in for a treat. The cuisine here is a unique blend of Austrian Tyrolean traditions and Italian flair. Lunches are a highlight—the mountain Rifugi (refuges) in this region are famous for serving unbelievable meals in spectacular, remote locations. In the evenings, you will enjoy high-quality dining at our hotels, featuring excellent local dishes and wines.

We specifically schedule our Dolomites tours for early June and early September to give you the best possible experience. These months offer the ideal combination of great hiking weather—warm days and cool evenings—without the intense heat or heavy crowds of the peak summer season (July and August).

Since we take care of the heavy logistics (like luggage transfers), you only need to carry a day pack while hiking. However, mountain weather is unpredictable, so packing the right gear is essential.

  • Footwear: Sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support are a must. The terrain can be rocky and includes loose rubble, so please leave the trainers or sneakers for the hotel.
  • Clothing Layers: The “onion principle” is key here. Even in summer, temperatures at 2400m can be cool. Bring a mix of short and long-sleeved base layers, a warm fleece or light down jacket, and a good quality waterproof and windproof jacket.
  • Sun Protection: At high altitudes, the UV rays are strong. Pack sunglasses, a sun hat, and high-factor sunscreen.
  • Evening Wear: Our hotels are delightfully luxurious. While you don’t need formal wear, the dress code for dinner is generally smart casual—it is nice to change out of hiking gear into something comfortable and presentable for the evening.
  • Day Pack: A comfortable backpack (approx. 20–30 litres) to carry your water bottle, extra layers, and camera.
  • Important Note on Poles: We supply hiking poles and aim to provide at least one per person. If you like to have two, please consider bringing your own.
