Through Vineyards, Lakes & Alpine Valleys

Join us on a spectacular journey through Northern Italy, a region of dramatic contrasts and unparalleled beauty. We begin in Piedmont, a land of rolling vineyards and culinary excellence, where we will hunt for truffles, taste world-class Barolo wines, and master local recipes in a private cooking class.

From the gentle vine-clad hills, we ascend into the majestic High Alps to breathe the crisp mountain air near the Swiss border and explore the untouched beauty of a protected Alpine park. Finally, we descend to the shimmering Italian Lakes. We will hop between the enchanted islands of Lake Maggiore and stroll the cobblestones of Lake Orta, visit small villages, and explore botanical gardens. This is a tour of the senses: the taste of fine wine, the sight of snow-capped peaks, and the feeling of la dolce vita.

We highly recommend arriving a few days early to beat jet lag and enjoy Turin’s incredible architecture and cuisine.

We meet at 13.00 at Turin Train Station and whisk you away to the heart of the Roero wine region. Our home for the next three nights is a stunning country farmhouse hotel nestled among the vineyards. We waste no time immersing ourselves in local culture with a visit to a prestigious local estate for our first wine tasting.

In the late afternoon, we head to the town of Bra—the birthplace of the Slow Food movement—for a special cooking class followed by a delicious welcome dinner at a renowned slow food restaurant.

Meals: Dinner
Overnight: Canale

We start our day in La Morra, a hilltop village offering one of the most panoramic views in the region. From here, we set out on a stunning walk through the UNESCO-listed landscape, winding through vineyards down to the historic town of Barolo. After a walk to Novello and a well-deserved lunch we explore the whimsical Barolo Wine Museum.

We return to our hotel for some free time to relax before gathering for dinner in the winery.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Hike: 3-4 hours, approx. 6 miles / 10 km
Overnight: Canale

It wouldn’t be a trip to Piedmont without searching for its “white gold.” We spend the morning with a local expert hunter and his dog, learning the secrets of the forest, followed by a delicious truffle brunch with our host.

In the afternoon, we stretch our legs with a scenic walk through the vineyards to the medieval village of Barbaresco, home to the “Queen” of Italian wines.

In the evening we head to Alba for some free time to wander its medieval streets. Dinner tonight is at a beloved local institution famous for its traditional pasta dishes.

Hike: Trfulle Hunt (2h) + 6km
Overnight: Canale

We bid farewell to the Langhe and drive to the ruggedly beautiful and lesser known Monferrato region. Our morning walk takes us to Cellamonte, a village built entirely of stone. Here, we visit an Infernot—unique underground wine cellars carved by hand into the rock, now a UNESCO heritage treasure. After a picnic lunch, we drive north toward the lakes. We check into our beautiful hotel situated right on the shores of Lake Orta, a peaceful lake often overlooked by crowds but adored by writers and poets.

We begin with a walk up the “Sacred Mountain” (Sacro Monte) and Monte Mesma, enjoying sweeping views over the lake, followed by a picnic near an ancient convent. Today the scenery changes dramatically as we leave the lakes and head high into the Alps to the Macugnaga Valley. This area sits at the foot of the majestic Monte Rosa, the second-highest mountain in the Alps. It is arguably the best place in Italy to admire the sheer scale of this Himalayan-sized wall of rock and ice. Our walk takes us past a magical alpine lake—perfect for a coffee and cake stop—and through a beautifully preserved Walser village. Here, we marvel at the unique dark wood architecture of the Germanic people who settled these high valleys centuries ago.

FAQs

Our most popular Questions and Answers about Piemonte and our Small Group Tours.

This tour is a “tour of the senses” that offers a rare combination of Italy’s most dramatic landscapes in a single journey. While many trips stick solely to the wine regions or the lakes, we connect the dots between them all.

You will journey from the rolling UNESCO vineyards of Barolo and Barbaresco, up into the majestic High Alps beneath Monte Rosa (the second-highest peak in the Alps), and finally descend to the shimmering shores of Lake Maggiore and Lake Orta. You get the full Northern Italian experience: hunting for white truffles with a local expert, dining in Michelin-starred restaurants, and exploring enchanted islands by private boat—all in one trip.

    • Staying On: If you plan to stay in Italy longer, you can easily catch the Malpensa Express train from the airport back into central Milan to continue your travels.

The best option for international travellers is to fly into Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP) and take the train to Turin.

From Milan Malpensa (MXP): There is no direct train from the airport to Turin, so you will need to change trains in Milan.

  • Take the Malpensa Express train from the airport to Milano Centrale station (approx. 50 mins).
      • From Milano Centrale, transfer to a high-speed Frecciarossa or Italo train to Torino Porta Nuova (approx. 1 hour). The total journey is smooth and efficient, bringing you right into the heart of the city.

Arrival Tip: We strongly recommend arriving a few days early to overcome jet lag and explore Turin’s regal architecture and chocolate culture before the tour begins.

Piemonte is widely considered the gastronomic capital of Italy, and food is a central theme of this “tour of the senses” . The cuisine here is rich and refined, often described as a blend of Italian passion and French technique.

  • The Wines: You will taste world-class vintages in the home of Barolo (“The King of Wines”) and Barbaresco .
  • Local Specialties: We visit Bra, the birthplace of the Slow Food movement, for a private cooking class and dinner . You will also hunt for “white gold” (white truffles) with a local expert—a true bucket-list experience .
  • Dining Experiences: Meals range from hearty rustic lunches in alpine villages to a celebratory dinner at a Michelin-starred restaurant . In Turin, you can also explore the city’s royal chocolate culture .

We have curated a collection of unique, locally-owned hotels that perfectly balance authentic Italian culture with high-end comfort. Rather than staying in impersonal chains, you can expect stunning properties with a distinct sense of place. You will stay in a country villa nestled amongst the vineyards, a peaceful lakeside retreat on Lake Orta, and a magical hotel located directly on a small fisherman’s island . Each location is chosen to ensure you relax in style after a day of walking.

We schedule our tours during the two most beautiful seasons in Northern Italy: May and late September to early October.

  • May: The region is lush and vibrant. The gardens of Lake Maggiore are in bloom, and the snow-capped peaks of the Alps provide a dramatic backdrop to the green vineyards .
  • Late September & October: This is harvest season, arguably the best time for food lovers as it coincides with the white truffle season . The air is crisp, and you will see the beautiful autumn colours emerging—from the turning leaves in the vineyards to the golden foliage of the larch trees high in the Alps .

Because this tour covers diverse environments—from sunny vineyards and lakes to the high alpine valleys—the weather can be changeable.

  • Footwear: Comfortable, broken-in walking boots or sturdy hiking shoes with good grip are essential for the trails in the Alps and vineyards. We also suggest comfortable shoes for exploring cobblestone villages in the evenings.
  • Layers: Temperatures will drop as we ascend into the High Alps near the Swiss border. We recommend a “layering” system: bring t-shirts, a warm fleece or jumper, and a waterproof windbreaker so you can adapt to the “crisp mountain air”.
  • Evening Wear: While generally relaxed, we do have a special dinner at a Michelin-starred restaurant, so we recommend packing some smart-casual attire for that evening.
  • Sun Protection: At high altitudes, the UV rays are strong. Pack sunglasses, a sun hat, and high-factor sunscreen.

  • Day Pack: A comfortable backpack (approx. 20–30 litres) to carry your water bottle, extra layers, and camera.
