Explore Puglia on foot on our exciting walking tour and enjoy breath-taking sea views along a rugged coastline dotted with “Trulli” and vast expanses of ancient olive groves seemingly untouched by time.
Our journey takes us to the heel of the Italian peninsula, a land blessed with sun, sea, and dramatically changing landscapes. We discover Trani, Otranto and the decorative baroque town of Lecce, visit imperial Castel del Monte, explore the spectacular Castellana Caves and two national parks. Before ending our beautiful journey, we stop to explore the ‘Sassi’ cave dwellings of Matera.
Hospitality in Puglia is a truly memorable experience; our accommodations are in the region’s traditional “masserie”—historic agricultural estates—where we are welcomed with open arms by the locals and fed an abundance of delicious Pugliese specialities.
Our walking tour of Puglia explores the sun-drenched heel of Italy, a land of rugged coastlines, ancient olive groves, and unique Trulli houses. It is a compelling destination rich in history and dramatically changing landscapes, from baroque towns to prehistoric cave dwellings.

Stunning walk from Otranto along a dramatic coastline of cliffs, fortified farms and watchtowers to reach the beautiful cove of Porto Badisco where the bay displays aqua marine reflections among fishing boats bobbing up and down in the water. According to Homer, Aeneas landed here on his escape from Troy!

We visit the baroque city of Lecce, sometimes called the Florence of the South. The historic center is a great place for strolling to admire handcrafts and spotting Roman remains.

We then head to the coast for a beautiful walk in a protected marine nature reserve known as Torre Guaceto. Along this short piece of coastland with exceptional sandy and rocky backdrops, we walk through maquis and olive groves and fresh water lagoons where migrant birds stop to feed.

A fascinating walk across to the Murge Materana and later among Matera’s Sassi, the best surviving and most complete examples of rock-cut settlements in the Mediterranean basin. Developed in close harmony with the natural environment, the caves here have been used since prehistoric times. At first bare cave dwellings, they were used as early Christian churches or to house flocks of sheep and later they were developed into house-like structures. This setting has inspired film directors for decades and was used for the film ‘The Passion’.

This journey takes you to the sun-drenched “heel” of Italy, a land of dramatically changing landscapes and deep-rooted traditions. Our tour stands out for its deep immersion into the local culture; you will stay in traditional masserie—historic agricultural estates—and experience the legendary hospitality of the region. From the whimsical Trulli houses of Alberobello to the ancient Sassi cave dwellings of Matera, we combine UNESCO World Heritage sites with rugged coastal walks and vast, ancient olive groves.
We meet at 14.00 on Day 1 at Bari Airport. If you have arrived earlier and are staying at the Bari airport hotel Parco dei Principi, we can also arrange to pick you up there shortly after the main airport rendezvous.
For international travellers from the US, Canada, or Australia, the most efficient route is to fly into a major European hub and take a connecting flight to Bari International Airport (BRI).
We highly recommend arriving a day or two before the tour begins to settle in and shake off any jet lag. While many guests choose to spend time in Rome before heading south, a wonderful local option is the seaside town of Polignano a Mare. If you choose to stay there, we can conveniently drive by and pick you up on Day 1 after our initial rendezvous at the Bari airport.
For your stay in Polignano a Mare, we recommend the following high-quality options:
Alternatively, if you prefer to stay right at the airport for a seamless start, the Parco dei Principi hotel is our designated secondary pick-up point.
This tour is considered fairly easy and accessible, focusing on enjoyable walks through diverse landscapes rather than strenuous mountain trekking.
Read more on our Difficulty Level Guide.
Pugliese cuisine is a celebration of “cucina povera”—simple, high-quality ingredients transformed into feasts. You will enjoy an abundance of local specialties, including fresh cheeses, olives, figs, melons, and broad beans. Vegetables abund! A highlight of the tour is dining in our masseria accommodations, where we are fed traditional dishes prepared with ingredients grown on the estate.
Our accommodations are a highlight of the trip. We stay in traditional masserie, which are historic, fortified agricultural estates. These unique properties have been beautifully restored to offer high-end comfort while retaining their authentic character, often surrounded by olive groves that have stood for centuries.
We schedule our tours to take advantage of Puglia’s best weather, typically in the Spring and Autumn. These seasons avoid the intense heat of the southern Italian summer while ensuring the landscapes are at their most vibrant—from the lush green olive groves in May to the clear, crisp light of October that perfectly illuminates the white stone of the “Città Bianca” (Ostuni).
