Medieval towers, marble mountains, and cliffside villages

Our small group walking tour of the Cinque Terre & North of Tuscany is a journey of diversity between land and sea.

Explore the historic hill-towns of Etruscan Tuscany, admire fresco paintings in their original settings and look up at the skylines of medieval towers. Walk on an ancient system of footpaths connecting fishing villages snuggled into coves, past churches clinging to the rocks, through terraced vineyards, lemon orchards and olive groves overlooking the azure Mediterranean sea.

ITINERARY

Our walking tour of the Cinque Terre and Northern Tuscany journeys from the towered hill-towns of the Etruscans to the vibrant cliffside villages of the Italian Riviera. We traverse a diverse landscape of terraced vineyards, ancient marble mountains, and azure coastal paths.

FAQs

Our most popular Questions and Answers about Corsica and our Small Group Tours.

This tour offers an extraordinary journey of diversity, transitioning seamlessly between the medieval hill towns of Etruscan Tuscany and the dramatic cliffside villages of the Italian Riviera. You will experience a unique blend of high culture and natural beauty, from attending a concert of Puccini Opera Arias in Lucca to venturing deep into the active underground marble quarries of Carrara where Michelangelo sourced his stone. Our route follows an ancient system of footpaths that link colourful fishing coves, terraced vineyards, and lemon orchards, providing a complete immersion into the landscapes of the Mediterranean.

We meet at 14.00 on Day 1 at the Florence Villa Costanza parking, coach, and tramway station. This location is easily accessible from the city centre via the T1 Tramway.

Use the Tramways.
Tramway T2 takes you quickly and cheaply into the city centre from the airport.
Tramway T1 takes you out to Villa Costanza Parking, coach park and our Pick-up point.

For international travellers arriving from the US, Canada, or Australia, there are several convenient options:

  • By Air: The closest international hubs are Florence Airport (FLR) and Pisa International Airport (PSA).
  • By Train: Many international flights arrive at Rome Fiumicino (FCO) or Milan Malpensa (MXP). From these airports, you can take a high-speed Frecciarossa train directly to Firenze Santa Maria Novella station; the journey takes approximately 1 hour 35 minutes from Rome or under 2 hours from Milan.
  • Local Transfer: From Florence Airport, the T2 Tramway runs directly into the city centre. To reach our meeting point at Villa Costanza, take the T1 Tramway from the main station area.

We highly recommend arriving in Firenze at least two days before the tour begins to adjust to the time zone and explore the “birthplace of the Renaissance”.

  • What to See: Do not miss the Duomo (Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore), the Uffizi Gallery for world-class Renaissance art, and the Galleria dell’Accademia to see Michelangelo’s David.

We rate this tour as Moderate to Challenging, featuring a mix of rolling countryside and steep coastal paths.

  • Daily Activity: You should be prepared to walk between 8km and 16km (5 to 10 miles) per day.
  • Terrain: Expect varied surfaces including gravel country roads, shaded forest trails, steep ancient stone stairways and costal paths.
  • Elevation: The coastal sections in the Cinque Terre involve significant undulations and steep descents, such as the final day’s trek which drops 600 metres down into Portovenere.

The cuisine is a celebration of Tuscan land and Ligurian sea.

  • Tuscany: You will enjoy traditional local fare at family wineries, accompanied by Vernaccia wine in San Gimignano.
  • Cinque Terre: The menu shifts to fresh Mediterranean flavours. Highlights include tasting the local Sciacchetra wine and exploring atmospheric restaurants in Monterosso that specialise in regional seafood dishes.

We stay in a curated selection of high-quality, locally owned hotels that reflect the character of each stop. You will enjoy stays in the heart of medieval San Gimignano, the elegant walled city of Lucca, the seaside charm of Monterosso, and the picturesque fortress town of Portovenere. Each location is chosen to provide a comfortable and authentic retreat after a day on the trails.

We schedule our departures during Late Spring (May/June) and Early Autumn (September/October).

  • Spring: Offers fresh temperatures, lush green vineyards, and wildflowers in full bloom.
  • Autumn: Is ideal for food lovers during the harvest season; the weather is typically stable and mild, often still warm enough for a post-hike dip in the sea.
  • Footwear: Sturdy, broken-in walking boots with ankle support are mandatory for the rocky paths and steep stone stairways of the Cinque Terre.
  • Clothing: A layering system is essential for adapting to temperature changes between the shaded Lucca valley and sunny coastal trails.
  • Evening Wear: Pack smart-casual attire for our dinners and the opera concert in Lucca.
  • Essentials: Don’t forget swimwear for the Mediterranean, a waterproof jacket, and a comfortable 20–30 litre day pack.
