Independent arrival in Córdoba. Meet your guides at the hotel.

We visit the Medina Azahara archaeological site, a short distance from Córdoba where we see the reconstructed remains of a fabulous 10th century palace city that represented the apogee of Córdoba’s power and sophistication.

In the evening we head out for welcome dinner in one of Córdoba’s excellent restaurants, the city being well-known in Andalucía for its cuisine.

Meals: Dinner
Walk: 2 hrs. in archaeological ruins

We start with a guided walking tour of the historic centre. We will get an idea of why the city’s star shone so brightly in Roman and Moorish times. As a testimony to this, we enter the incredible and utterly unique Cathedral-Mosque, the city’s main place of worship from the 8th century to this day, and the oldest mosque in Spain.

After a delicious lunch in one of Córdoba’s finest establishments you will have free time to explore the city before we meet again to visit Córdoba’s royal stables and watch a traditional Andalusian equestrian show*.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Walk: 2-3 hrs. – City walking tour
*usually available

We travel to a rocky hill top occupied by the hermitage of Virgen de la Sierra which, at 1267m altitude, gives us great views across the Sierra Subbética Natural Park. The walk is largely descending, through holm oak woods and along the Río Bailón, taking us around 5 hours to reach the white village of Zuheros with its medieval castle keep that overlooks a vast sea of olive trees.

At dinner in the village we enjoy a spread of dishes cooked with wonderful local extra virgin olive oil and learn a little about Spanish agriculture and rural life.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Hike: 5 hrs, 13 km (feels like 16 km with total descent of 400m)

We pass Moorish period watchtowers and castle from the 13th-15th centuries when this was the Christian frontier with the Muslim sultanate of Granada. We will walk from one such castle, in the village of Moclín, on a delightful circular walk through the valley of the Rio Gollizno which we cross via a hanging bridge. As we climb back up to the town there are superb views of the castle walls and fortifications which, along with a picnic in the shade of pine trees, will reward us for our efforts.

We now continue to Granada, home to the magnificent Alhambra Palaces (UNESCO).

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Hike: 4 hrs, 8 km (feels like 12 km)

We walk through the narrow streets of the old medieval town and into the area known as the Albaicin with its balconies, walls, stairways and hidden courtyards. We are gradually climbing to reach a vista point across the Darro river valley. From here we can see the magnificent Alhambra Palace, one of Europe’s most stunning monuments and perhaps the greatest surviving legacy from over eight centuries of the Moorish presence on the Iberian Peninsula. We now descend and cross the river and wind up a path to reach the Palace and go in with a guide. After a visit which lasts about 2 hours we make our way down through a forest into another neighbourhood for a relaxing lunch.

The afternoon is free for you to explore further independently.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
Walk: 4 hrs, City walking tour incl. Alhambra Palaces

N.B. Wear thick soled shoes for the cobbled streets!

We head east across Andalucía today and visit its geographic centre, the city of Antequera, and its imposing natural motif, the karst limestone plateau of El Torcal. Here wind, rain and erosion have wrought strange patterns in the pillars of rock, creating a myriad of sculptures and shapes. With a local guide we will do a circular walk (4.5km, 3 hours) through this unique landscape where we will see ammonites – a type of fossil which enables scientists to link the rock layer to specific geologic time periods. We are also likely to see many bird species as the area is categorised a “Special Zone for the Protection of Birds”.

We end the day in Ronda.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Hike: 3 hrs, 8 km

Known as the ‘Queen of the White Towns’, Ronda occupies a spectacular position straddling a deep chasm. We leave the town behind to hike through the valley below, offering us a fresh perspective and incredible views looking back up at the imposing cliffs.

Our path leads to a unique local winery housed in a restored historical building, where we enjoy a private picnic lunch among the vines. Back in town, we visit the famous Real Maestranza bullring, followed by a free evening to explore and dine at your leisure.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
Hike: 4hrs, 9km (2 hrs City walking + 2 hrs hiking down and up the gorge +/-300m)

Scenic drive to Grazalema where our trail into the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park begins. We climb up steeply at first to admire sweeping views across the plains of the Cadiz province and the peaks of the Sierras. Our walk then descends more gradually and enters the narrow streets of Grazalema where we make a short stop to take in the atmosphere and beauty of this quintessential Pueblo Blanco (white town).

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Hike: 3 hrs, 6km (feels like10 km), +/- 200m

We head to the coast to explore Sanlúcar de Barrameda, a lively town at the mouth of the Guadalquivir River. We stroll through the bustling local market and along the estuary before visiting a traditional bodega to taste the region’s famous Manzanilla wine.

After a relaxed lunch in a town square, we return to Jerez de la Frontera. The afternoon is free to discover this hidden gem of a city at your own pace before we meet for a delicious dinner.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Activities: Sherry Bodega winery

Departure for Seville at 9.00. Seville train station drop off at 10.30

FAQs

Our most popular Questions and Answers about Andalucía and our Small Group Tours.

We believe no other tour captures the sheer breadth of Andalucía quite like this one. While many trips focus solely on the famous cities or just the mountain trails, we seamlessly blend them both.

You will experience the “Golden Triangle” of Moorish cities—Córdoba, Granada, and Seville—but we also take you deep into the countryside to discover the charming “Pueblos Blancos” (white villages) that you would never find on your own. From hiking the surreal limestone sculptures of El Torcal and wandering vast olive groves in the Sierra Subbética to tasting Manzanilla sherry in the coastal town of Sanlúcar, this tour offers a complete immersion into the culture, food, and landscapes of Southern Spain.

  • Meeting Point: We meet at our hotel in Córdoba on Day 1. The specific meeting time will be confirmed in your final travel documents, but generally, we gather in the hotel reception at 14.00 before heading out for our first visit to the Medina Azahara archaeological site.
  • Drop Off: The tour concludes on Day 10 with a transfer to Seville. We schedule a drop-off at Seville Train Station at 10:30 am.

For international travellers coming from the US, Canada, or Australia, the smoothest option is usually to fly into Madrid Barajas Airport (MAD).

  • Arrival: Take the excellent AVE high-speed train directly from Madrid (Atocha Station) to Córdoba Central. The journey is comfortable, scenic, and takes approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes.
  • Departure: When you are ready to leave, you can take the high-speed AVE train from Seville Santa Justa station back to Madrid (approx. 2.5 hours) or fly out of Seville Airport (SVQ) for European connections.

We highly recommend arriving a day early to settle in.

  • Where to Stay: We recommend the Hotel Casas de la Juderia. It is a charming, historic hotel perfectly located for exploring the old town on foot.
  • What to See: Córdoba is a UNESCO World Heritage gem. Use your extra time to:
    • Wander the Juderia (Jewish Quarter) with its labyrinth of narrow streets and flowered patios.
    • Visit the Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos and its beautiful gardens.
    • Simply enjoy the atmosphere of this city, which was once the capital of the Islamic Emirate and one of the most advanced cities in the world.

Since our tour concludes in Seville but does not include a guided visit of the city, we highly recommend extending your stay for a few nights to explore this Andalusian jewel.

  • Where to Stay: For a luxurious stay with incredible views, we recommend the EME Catedral Hotel, located right next to the cathedral. Alternatively, for a charming boutique experience with a traditional courtyard, Hotel Casa 1800 is an excellent choice.
  • What to See: Seville is famous for its passion and history.
    • The Cathedral & Giralda: Visit the largest Gothic cathedral in the world and climb the bell tower for sweeping city views.
    • Real Alcázar: Explore this stunning royal palace complex, a masterpiece of Mudéjar architecture and a filming location for Game of Thrones.
    • Barrio Santa Cruz: Lose yourself in the narrow, winding streets of the old Jewish quarter, filled with orange trees and tapas bars.

We rate this tour as Moderate. It offers a wonderful variety of walking environments, from city tours on cobblestones to nature trails in National Parks.

  • Daily Activity: Expect to hike between 8km and 13km (5 to 8 miles) on most days, with durations ranging from 3 to 5 hours.
  • Elevation: Elevation gains are generally manageable, often between 200m and 400m, though some days involve descents of similar vertical distance.
  • Terrain: The terrain is diverse. You will walk on the unique karst limestone of El Torcal, through oak forests and olive groves in the Sierra Subbética, and tackle the famous cobblestone streets of the historic cities (thick-soled shoes are a must!).

You are in for a culinary adventure! The food here reflects the region’s rich history, a delicious blend of Moorish and Mediterranean influences.

  • Local Specialties: We will enjoy tapas, refreshing gazpacho, mouth-watering jamón ibérico, and traditional paella.
  • Olive Oil: As we walk through the sea of olive trees in Zuheros, you will learn why this region produces some of the world’s best extra virgin olive oil, a staple of every meal.
  • Wine & Sherry: A highlight of the trip is our visit to Jerez de la Frontera for a traditional Sherry bodega tour and tasting. We also visit Sanlúcar de Barrameda for fresh seafood paired with local Manzanilla wine.

We have selected charming, locally-owned hotels that capture the spirit of Southern Spain. Rather than large, impersonal chains, we favour properties with character and history—think converted manor houses or traditional Andalusian architecture with internal courtyards. These hotels offer high standards of comfort and are situated in prime locations, allowing you to relax in style after a day on the trails.

We schedule this tour for late March and early April to ensure the best possible hiking weather.

  • Spring: This is the ideal window to visit Southern Spain. The weather is generally sunny and pleasant (perfect for hiking), avoiding the intense, scorching heat of the Andalucian summer.
  • Nature: The countryside is green and vibrant, and wildflowers are often in bloom in the natural parks like the Sierra de Grazalema.
  • Footwear: Sturdy, well-broken-in walking boots are mandatory for the mountain paths in El Torcal and Sierra de Grazalema.
    • Note: For the city walking tours (especially in Granada and Córdoba), the streets are often cobbled and uneven. We strongly recommend bringing shoes with thick soles for comfort.
  • Layers: Although we travel in spring, temperatures can vary between the warm cities and the cooler mountain altitudes (like the Sierra Subbética at 1267m). Bring layers, including a fleece and a waterproof jacket.
  • Evening Wear: “Smart casual” is perfect for our dinners. Andalucians tend to dress smartly in the evenings, so it is nice to have a change of clothes for dining out.
