A journey of the soul, from the Pyrenees to the Atlantic

El Camino de Santiago is the route for one of the most important medieval pilgrimages. Walk with us in stages as a small group of pilgrims from the French-Spanish border to the Atlantic Ocean. We follow the old route of Saint James to Santiago de Compostela and on to Finisterre, the ‘End of the World’. This journey is a life-changing experience, rich in cultural encounters, incredible landscapes, great food and the best ever company.

We’ve chosen the best walks and take care of the transportation of your luggage as you walk The Way. Whether it is for religious beliefs, spiritual reasons, mindful time-out or simply that beautiful feeling of wanderlust, the Camino is calling and you must go!

ITINERARY

Our small group walking tour of selected parts of el Camino de Santiago invites you to walk iconic pilgrim paths, historic villages and rolling landscapes in the company of like-minded travellers.

PICK UP & DROP OFF INFO

PICK UP: 10.00 am at Bilbao airport

DROP OFF: 9.00 am or after breakfast independent departure from Santiago de Compostela

We highly recommend staying a few nights in the vibrant city of Bilbao before the tour starts to explore the city at your own pace.

We meet at 10.00 at Bilbao airport and drive along the Spanish northern coast and into France.

We arrive in St Jean Pied de Port for lunch followed by a leisurely stroll around the town’s medieval streets. After collecting our pilgrim passports we head to our wonderful hotel, nestled in the Basque countryside, and get together for a lovely welcome dinner.

Meals: Lunch, Dinner
Overnight: Ostape

We begin our Camino tracing the steps of ancient pilgrims, heading up into the Pyrenees for breathtaking views and our first picnic. After lunch we cross over the Spanish border and descend into one of the oldest and most important stops on the Camino, the 11th century monastery of Roncesvalles. Here the Basques defeated the rear guard of Charlemagne’s army, spawning the famous epic poem of chivalry “La Chanson de Roland”.

Walk: 5.5h/18km (3h/10km option) Elev. +1400m/-600m
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Overnight: Roncesvalles

Walk out of the front door of your hotel in Roncevalles and make your way to Zubiri through lush Basque countryside. From here a short drive takes us to the ancient city of Pamplona, which with its Fiesta de San Fermin and beautiful architecture has captured the eye of many artists. Enjoy a pleasant walk around the city following the route of the famous running of the bulls and tracing Hemingway’s footsteps before we meet again for dinner.

Walk: 6h/22km (4h/13km option)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Overnight: Pamplona

Today we step into the Rioja region, home to Spain’s finest and most renowned wine. We walk through gently rolling hills and vineyards towards the beautiful town of St Domingo de La Calzada. Admire its enchanting cathedral and spend a relaxing evening in the town’s streets busy with many pilgrims.

Walk: (4h/14km)
Meals: Breakfast, Picnic, Dinner
Overnight: St Domingo de la Calzada

We leave St Domingo and move on along a quiet mountain path through oak and pine woods and emerge in St. Juan de Ortega. After lunch we walk on to the quaint village of Ages, before driving on to Burgos. Walk: (3.5h/13km) (Elev. +/-400m)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today we experience life in the heart of Castilla y Leon, walking through the Mesetas and its slow paced villages. This highplateau 800m above sea level is entirely covered in cereal crops which form endless horizons broken only by the occasional view of a bell tower in the distance. Pilgrims walk along this path for many days and have been known to describe these endless silent stretches as the most thought provoking and spiritual of the whole Camino. We enter the picturesque streets of Leon with time to enjoy the city and its many streets, boutiques and squares.

Walk: 5h/18km (3.5h/13km option)
Meals: Breakfast, Picnic, Dinner
Overnight: Leon

Our day begins by crossing the Puente de Órbigo, Spain’s longest and best-preserved medieval bridge. We journey through the town of Hospital de Órbigo and out across open countryside toward our destination, Astorga. Enjoy a free afternoon to stroll among the different periods of architecture existing in perfect harmony- ancient Roman walls, a gothic cathedral and the modern Gaudi Palace – contrasting and complimenting one another.

Walk: 5h/17km (4h/13km option)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Overnight: Astorga

One of our favourite walks of El Camino de Santiago! We head up into the mountains, over the pass of Irago and through the beautiful villages of Rabanal del Camino and Foncebadon and descend a winding pass through Ponferrada where there is a ruined ancient Castle of the Knights Templar. This ancient order was devoted to protecting pilgrims along the way and preserving the true spirituality of the Camino. We spend our evening and dinner relaxing in Villafranca tasting some excellent Bierzo wines.

Walk: 6.5h/20km (4h/15km option) (Elev. +/- 500m)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Overnight: Villafranca del Bierzo

We leave Villafranca del Bierzo to walk along the Camino up into the high mountains of Galicia to famous O’ Cebreiro. Here still standing is one of the oldest surviving churches associated with the Camino, the Iglesia de Santa Maria Real, dating as far back as the 9th century. We continue to the famous Pilgrim’s statue after lunch and then return to spend another evening in the beautiful town of Villafranca.

Today we walk through the beautiful hills and forest of Galicia, past traditional farming villages to the town of Portomarin which sits on the hillside overlooking a spectacular river. We enter the city of Santiago de Compostela, home to the shrines of St. James, the raison d’etre of the Camino de Santiago. The final leg of our pilgrimage starts in Monte del Gozo and from here we descend into the streets of the city. We arrive in the Praza Obradorio and Cathedral in time for the 12.00 am mass and see the swinging of the famous Botafumiero, giant incense burner. You are free to explore the city and shop in its many streets.

Our journey does not end here, as true pilgrims we must continue to Finisterre and the lighthouse at the end of the world. We walk into Finisterre along a spectacular, 2km stretch of the Playa de Langosteira beach and head on a further 3km to the famous lighthouse. Here, having lunch at the end of the world, staring over the ocean, our pilgrimage ends. From this point we can go no further! We return to spend another evening in Santiago.

FAQs

Our most popular Questions and Answers about the camino de santiago and our Small Group Tours.

Our Camino de Santiago tour is a journey of the soul that takes you from the foothills of the Pyrenees to the rugged Atlantic coast. Unlike traditional trips that cover only a small section of the Camino, we cover the full distance and have hand-picked the 11 most beautiful and significant stages. You will explore enchanting northern cities like Pamplona, Burgos, and Leon, and witness architectural wonders ranging from Romanesque cathedrals to spectacular Gaudí palaces. We also include the unique extension to the Finisterre lighthouse—the ‘End of the World’—ensuring your pilgrimage is truly complete.

The meeting point is at Bilbao Airport at 10.00 am on Day 1 of the tour.

* We can often offer a pick up in town as well, please check with your guides.

For our international travellers arriving from the US, Canada, or Australia, the most convenient route is to fly into a major European hub—such as London, Madrid, or Paris—and take a short connecting flight to Bilbao Airport (BIO).

  • To the City Centre: The city centre is easily accessible from the airport. A taxi takes approximately 15 minutes and costs roughly €25–€30. Alternatively, the BizkaiaBus (Line A3247) runs every 15 minutes, providing a quick shuttle service directly to the city.

We highly recommend arriving in Bilbao 1-2 days early to adjust to explore this vibrant city.

  • Where to stay: We suggest staying at the Hotel NH Collection Villa de Bilbao and can often offer a pick up from here.
  • What to see: You must visit the iconic Guggenheim Museum to see its breathtaking architecture. Enjoy a walk along the river, explore the medieval “Seven Streets” in the Old Town, and sample world-famous Basque pintxos (tapas) in the local bars.

The walking on this tour is rated as Challenging. While we take care of all luggage transportation, you will be walking significant distances. Daily walks range from 10km (3 miles) up to 24km (15 miles). You will encounter varied terrain, including steep Pyrenean ascents (up to +1400m), rolling vineyard tracks in La Rioja, and the flat, silent stretches of the Meseta high plateau. Most days offer a shorter walking option (approx. 10–15km) for those who prefer a more relaxed pace.

Read our Difficulty Level Guide.

The cuisine is an exploration of Northern Spain’s culinary identities. In the evenings you will enjoy the refined gastronomy of the Basque Country, hearty Castilian flavours, and fresh Galician seafood as we reach the coast. During our hikes we focus on frequent, high-quality picnics in scenic spots, from Pyrenean peaks to shaded oak woods, allowing us to dine in the heart of the landscape.

You may be glad to learn that we do not stay in hostels or bunk beds!
We have selected a unique mix of accommodation that reflects the history and comfort of the route. You will stay in magnificent historic buildings and Paradors, such as the converted monasteries or grand edifices in Leon and Santiago, which offer a truly regal. These are balanced with a wonderful hotel nestled in the Basque countryside and charming, smaller family-owned hotels in quaint towns like Villafranca, providing a warm, comfortable and authentic atmosphere.

We schedule this tour during late spring and early summer because the weather is at its most favourable for walking. During this window, you can enjoy the lush, vibrant greenery of the Galician hills and comfortable temperatures before the intense heat of the Spanish summer arrives. Additionally, these dates allow our travellers to experience the beauty of the trail while still avoiding the much larger crowds that congregate on the Camino during the peak summer months.

Preparation is key for a successful pilgrimage:

  • Footwear: Sturdy, well-broken-in walking boots are mandatory.
  • Clothing: Use a layering system to adapt to temperature changes between the high mountains and the plains. Include moisture-wicking base layers and a waterproof jacket.
  • Evening Wear: Pack smart-casual attire for our group dinners in the evenings.
  • Sun Protection: A sun hat, sunglasses, and high-factor sunscreen are essential for the open stretches of the Meseta.
