Through stone villages and country lanes

The Cotswolds is the quintessential image of rural England, where dry stone walls lead to sleepy medieval villages of honey-colored stone and thatched cottages. On this gentle walking tour, we wander through bright yellow mustard fields and along footpaths trodden by sheep drovers since the Middle Ages. From the grand parklands of Blenheim Palace to the ruins of Hailes Abbey and the mosaics of a Roman Villa, the landscape is steeped in history. Each day ends authentically in traditional local pubs, enjoying a pint of beer or a glass of wine and the warm, cheery company of the locals.

ITINERARY

Our route traverses the high limestone escarpments and stone villages of the North Cotswolds. We journey through the pastoral Windrush Valley to the grand parklands of Oxfordshire and the historic riverbanks of Stratford-upon-Avon.

Our journey begins with a world-class falconry display at the Cotswold Falconry Centre before we set out for our first walk. We climb the Cotswold escarpment, passing through open fields to reach the delightful village of Blockley

A picnic lunch with some rest and then our walk leads us to the picturesque village of Bourton-on-the-Water with its eccentrically built miniature model of the village.

A beautiful long walk starts at the Wool Town of Northleach and winds through quaint hamlets and sleepy villages with beautiful gardens, crossing meadows and woodland with wildflowers in abundance. FAQs

Our most popular Questions and Answers about the Cotswolds and our Small Group Tours.

This tour offers the quintessential image of England, taking you through a landscape of honey-coloured stone villages and thatched cottages. We balance gentle activity with rich history, from the grandeur of Blenheim Palace and the Roman roots of Chedworth Roman Villa to the medieval ruins of Hailes Abbey. Unique experiences, such as a world-class falconry display and seeing a Shakespeare play in his home town, are paired with authentic evenings in traditional local pubs alongside the cheery company of locals.

We meet at 11:30 at Moreton-in-Marsh station on Day 1.

For international travellers the best gateway is London Heathrow (LHR).

From Heathrow, you can take the Heathrow Express to London Paddington, where direct trains run frequently to Moreton-in-Marsh. The direct train journey from London Paddington takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Alternatively, direct train services are also available from Oxford.

We highly recommend arriving in the UK at least one day early to adjust to the time zone.

London & Oxford is where most people chose to stay ahead of the tour. Alternatively Moreton-in-Marsh is a charming town where you can stay at historic coaching inn like The Manor House Hotel or the White Hart Royal Hotel.

This tour is rated as Fairly Easy. You will walk on a mix of country lanes, footpaths, and open fields, with some sections on the famous Cotswold Way.

  • Daily Distance: Between 4 and 9 miles (6km to 15km).
  • Daily Activity: Generally 2 to 5 hours of walking and visiting sites.
  • Terrain: Includes gentle climbs up the Cotswold escarpment and walking across rolling farmland and meadows.

Read our Difficulty Level Guide.

The food experience is authentically British, focusing on fresh local ingredients and traditional atmosphere. You will enjoy picnic lunches in the heart of the countryside and welcome dinners at our hotels. Evenings often conclude in traditional local pubs, where you can sample a pint of local beer or a glass of wine in a warm, social setting.

We stay in charming local hotels and historic buildings that reflect the character of the region. These properties are chosen for their comfort and charm, providing a relaxing environment to unwind after a day on the trail.

We schedule our tours in May, June, and July to capture the region at its most beautiful. During these months, wildflowers are in abundance, gardens are in full bloom, and the “bright yellow mustard fields” are at their peak. The weather is typically mild and ideal for walking under the long daylight hours of the English summer.

As the terrain involves fields and escarpments, sturdy walking boots are mandatory for support and grip. The British weather can be changeable, so we recommend a layering system (t-shirts, a warm jumper, and a waterproof jacket). For evenings at the hotels or local pubs, smart casual attire is perfectly suitable.
