We head north and across the Firth of Forth bridge with spectacular views of the famous Iron railway bridge, a true wonder of the modern engineering world.

We visit Blair Castle, the seat of the Atholl family for over 700 years. The castle’s history is told through its fine 18th-century interiors and distinctive Scottish baronial architecture. We will also explore the magnificent grounds, including the walled Hercules’ Garden and the towering conifers of Diana’s Grove. We now take a short walk in Pitlochry and make our way to our country hotel to relax before gathering for a welcome dinner.

We head for the Highlands travelling through the breathtaking scenery of the Great Glen to reach the world-famous shores of Loch Ness.

To experience the mystery of the water, we take a private boat across the lake, landing directly at the impressive ruins of Urquhart Castle. This historic site, perched on the water’s edge, evokes memories of a turbulent past and offers a perfect vantage point to keep an eye out for “Nessie,” the legendary serpentine beast said to lurk beneath the surface.

In the afternoon, we continue our scenic drive to the shores of the Isle of Skye, where we settle in for a two-night stay.

Walk: 1 hr, 3.5 km.

Overnight: Plockton

Heading to northern Skye, we follow a there-and-back trail up to the Old Man of Storr, climbing steep, winding gravel paths and rocky stone steps to reach towering pinnacles set against rolling green hills and the rugged coastline.

After retracing our steps down, enjoy free time for lunch and exploration in the colourful harbour town of Portree. In the afternoon, we return to Plockton, the “Jewel of the Highlands,” where a gentle microclimate lets palm trees flourish alongside cottage-lined bays.

Our first stop is a walk to the world-famous Glenfinnan Viaduct, where we hope to see the Jacobite steam train cross the 21 arches—a sight made legendary by the Harry Potter films. This tranquil setting on the shores of Loch Shiel is also steeped in history; it was here in 1745 that Bonnie Prince Charlie landed and raised the standard for the Jacobite campaign.

We then enter the dramatic, mist-shrouded valley of Glencoe. We take a short walk in the glen to breathe in the Highland air and absorb the haunting beauty of one of Scotland’s most unforgettable landscapes.

Leaving the shadow of Buachaille Etive Mòr, we tackle the West Highland Way’s highest pass.

A steady, rhythmic climb up the Devil’s Staircase—with regular stops for photos—rewards us at the summit with sweeping views of Glencoe and Ben Nevis.

Following a leisurely lunch break, we descend through open heather moorland toward Loch Leven. We return by van via the Glencoe Visitor Centre, concluding with independent dining at Kingshouse this evening.

We continue through the glacial scenery of the valley of Glencoe to reach the edge of sparkling Loch Lomond, the largest lake in Scotland. We believe our itinerary offers the most comprehensive way to experience the “true spirit of Scotland” by covering an extraordinary breadth of the country in a single journey.

You will enjoy a curated collection of wonderful walks through dramatic glacial valleys in Glencoe , native woodlands along Loch Faskally , and the jagged coastlines of the Isle of Skye. This is an immersive, active travel experience where you don’t just see the landscape—you live it. We meet at 10.00 AM on Day 1 at Edinburgh Airport. From there, we drive directly into the beautiful Kingdom of Fife to begin our coastal walk toward St Andrews

For international travellers from the US, Canada, or Australia, the most convenient option is to fly directly into Edinburgh Airport (EDI).

  • Airport Transfer: the tram or the Airlink 100 bus provides frequent and easy access between the city centre and the airport

Via London: You can also fly into London (LHR or LGW) and take a short domestic flight or enjoy a scenic 4.5-hour train journey from London King’s Cross to Edinburgh Waverley station.

We highly recommend arriving a day or two before the tour begins to shake off any jet lag, and explore Edinburgh’s unique charm. Alternatively you may wish to extend your stay at the end of the tour.

We suggest the following high-quality, centrally located hotels:

  • The Kimpton, Charlotte Square
  • The Bonham, Drumsheugh Gardens
  • Hotel du Vin, Bristo Place
  • Malmaison in St Andrew’s Square

We rate this tour as Moderate. It is designed for active travellers who enjoy being on their feet.

Scottish cuisine celebrates fresh, local, and seasonal ingredients, featuring authentic flavours like fresh seafood and local game. You will experience the vibrant atmosphere of local pubs and inns where traditional folk music still rings loud. Highlights include enjoying quintessential treats like scones during our visit to the historic Scone Palace and experiencing a tasting at one of the country’s oldest whisky distilleries.

We select charming, locally owned hotels and inns that reflect the character of the region. Expect a mix of historic hotels and comfortable accommodation chosen for their warm hospitality and proximity to our walking routes. After a day of exploring mist-shrouded lochs or jagged peaks, you will have a welcoming and cosy place to relax and recount the day’s adventures.

We schedule this tour for July to take advantage of the long daylight hours and the peak of the Scottish summer. During this time, the landscapes are incredibly lush, the wildflowers are in bloom, and the weather is generally at its most favourable for hiking in the Highlands and the Islands.

The Scottish weather is famous for being changeable—you might experience “four seasons in one day!”

  • Footwear: Sturdy, waterproof walking boots with good ankle support are mandatory for Highland trails.
  • The Layering System: Bring moisture-wicking base layers, a warm fleece, and a high-quality waterproof and windproof jacket.
  • Essentials: A small day pack (20-30 litres), a reusable water bottle, a sun hat, and perhaps a pair of waterproof trousers.
